semi-aquatic habitat of wet spongy ground, almost permanently inundated by water (in the contrary to marshes), typically dominated by woody plants and reeds, and often without an accumulation of degenerating plant material (peat) on the surface. The main types are 1) fresh-water swamp or marsh, 2) mangrove swamp and 3) boggy tundra.
